How do you pick a great Wedding DJ?
So then how do you pick a great DJ and what questions should you ask? No need to fear, there are still many great ways to decipher which DJ would be best for your big day. First, you’d want to check their website, which is a direct reflection of their business. Right or wrong, first impressions are everything. Second, you also want to type their business name and reviews. Google, Yelp, Wedding Wire, and the knot are excellent places to find positive and negative reviews. If you actually saw them DJ personally or were referred to this DJ by a friend, word of mouth still holds weight in this day in age by how well they perform.
In my experience, I have heard many of my clients ask the wrong questions. For example, “can I hear one of your mixes?”. If you were to ask the wedding DJ’s to send wedding mixes, they would all sound basically the same. Many of the same songs are popular at weddings. Shout, Journey’s Don’t stop believing, staying alive from the BeeGees, or almost anything from Bruno Mars right now. However, you do want to ask them if they can beatmatch or blend music. Beatmatching is when two tracks are at the same BPM or beats per minute. A great DJ can adjust each track to be the same BPM. However, in this industry, a lot of DJs do not know how to do this and play the whole song. This leaves your guests bored by the end of the song, hearing nothing changing, and will slowly walk off the dance floor.
Last, one of the most important parts of being a Wedding DJ is the master of ceremonies. Being a professional MC, your DJ is in charge of taking control of the night and making important announcements. Your grand introduction into the reception hall needs to have an explosive feeling that gets your guests on their feet and excited about your brand new marriage. So ask your DJ what kind of training he/she has been through, and how many weddings they have done. Ask them how comfortable they are on the mic, and if MCing is included with their services.
